Develop a heightened appreciation for environmental stewardship and tropical biology during the three week field course in Costa Rica.

About the Program

Students will gain an acclamation for conservation, climate change, sustainable agriculture and the Costa Rican culture through the following experiences:

  • Boat tours of coastal mangroves and freshwater marshes full of caiman and crocodiles
  • Visiting two active volcanoes
  • Exploring coffee, banana, pineapple and mango farms
  • Horseback riding through a working, ecofriendly cattle farm
  • Hiking the continental divide
  • Ziplining through the clouds and exploring canopy bridges

This unique study abroad course allows students to explore and encounter hundreds of migrant and native species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects throughout the cloudforest, rainforest, dryforest, coastal and volcanic ecosystems in Costa Rica. From the cloudforests of Monteverde to the costal lowlands of Hacienda Baru, students will be traveling to a new ecosystem location every few days. 

Students will return from this three week adventure with an expanded world view, an understanding of Costa Rican culture, and a yearning to learn more about locally found birds.
